Old persons failing to make ends meet even though they diligently worked and saved. Old persons retiring very nicely on investments and ventures that have paid handsomely. Young people who live richly on disproportionate pay with no experience. Young people who fail to find careers or a livable wage even with extensive education. It's seems a little chaotic at first but this income inequality thing has been building for a while now.

Recently there's been some visibility to this issue sparked by an essay by a well-known venture capitalist, Paul Graham. Which was picked by and editorialized across the inter-webs including a nicely framed and researched article in The Washington Post (I recognize implying "researched" about a Washington Post article is a bit redundant and unnecessary).

In my own mind, I get why a VC (someone who makes money using money!) would be trying to shave the goat a little and make it sound like start-ups and investing are about creating value. In his view, he'd like convince you that somehow his way of making money from money is good and different from all the other guys who make money using money in bad ways. And his parting shot is a nice bit of white-washing:

"...let's attack poverty, and if necessary damage wealth in the process. ... And if there are people getting rich by tricking consumers or lobbying the government for anti-competitive regulations or tax loopholes, then let's stop them. Not because it's causing economic inequality, but because it's stealing." - Paul Graham

Who wouldn't agree with that?! The issue is that it isn't nearly enough and tries to draw an arbitrary line implying that some forms of wealth creation without value creation are acceptable. And splitting this proverbial hair is where those who are calling for reform are also missing the mark.

It is unwise (some might say impossible) to stop innovation and the ability leverage advantages into disproportionate earnings. So why try? Instead of trying to determine where value is being creating simply tax those transactions that are purely financial. This treats everyone who is making money using money all the same unrelated to if value was actually created. This approach is referred to as a Financial Transactions Tax and generally applies to the purchase and sale of stocks, derivatives or other financial instruments. These are widely promoted and there are several in effect in countries other than the United States. Recently the Tax Policy Center published an interesting discussion draft of some analysis they'd been working on that is specific to FTTs. While they cover the topic from a lot of angles and have very in-depth research and examples of the topic, it is worth noting that even adopting a small and very progressive form of FTT could generate an estimated $50 billion (that's a B, folks) in revenue. Where would this go? Why to fix all the inequality areas of course! Healthcare, education, and so forth.

So while it is necessary to grab your pitchforks and light the torches to go after the crooks who are pulling money out of the economy in sneaky, underhanded ways, it is just as important to pull back the disguise on all these wolves of wall street too. If you are making money using any means that doesn't inject that equal value into the economy, you deserve to be taxed so as much wealth as possible stays in the economy and out of private hands.

"If you wake up and you have enough voice to say 'Good Morning' to the first person you see tomorrow. You did something wrong here at the concert tonight."

You have to sing and scream and let your whole being erupt through your throat with the ferocity only your inner-most being possesses. If you don't let yourself impact the world around you, then you aren't living. If you don't let the world impact you, you're just dying slowly and alone.

So sing. Let your voice roam so free...it gets lost.Tempus Fugatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11837079658924039253noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10750775.post-80323706007156449502015-02-15T19:40:00.001-08:002015-02-15T19:40:51.884-08:00Get On The Amazon Trsin
Nice article on making the best switch you'll ever make for home entertainment.

Why this Apple TV fan has come to prefer Amazon's Fire TV
https://gigaom.com/2015/02/14/why-this-apple-tv-fan-has-come-to-prefer-amazons-fire-tv/

Tempus Fugatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11837079658924039253noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10750775.post-8754543138421215862014-12-05T21:23:00.001-08:002014-12-05T21:23:59.486-08:00The Future Of Music
I've been saying for a while that you need to appreciate the difference between new music and the older catalog. I'm kicking myself for not having started this sooner. It's only 3 weeks in but the change is quite remarkable. Obviously for an unformed lump of clay such as myself with no discernible grace or flexibility any repetitious activity is bound to show some form of improvement. But seriously, I'm loving it.

There are times when I prefer to be anti-social. And anytime I am exerting myself in conquest is going to fall into that category. I despise the little "who has something good to share" portion and pretty much every social aspect of attending sessions in a studio. But I truly deeply understand the need for good instruction and I am exceedingly blessed to have found myself with several who are gifted and patient with one such as I.

Even though it has been a short while, I am beginning to notice the differences in styles and how I respond to each. I enjoy the various flows immensely once I've had sufficient time to master the individual poses and transitions. Having time to hold and adjust and feel is very nice while I am learning. But when then I get a rush when I can move through them more quickly and push myself to demonstrate some smoothness or agility. This concept being laughable to many who know me I suppose.

In any case, it brings me much contentment to find myself with such a long way to go before I begin to look less silly doing something that I would very much like to do better.

In the landscape of life, there are some mountains (like solution architecture) on which I sit at the peak and other mountains (say strategy or entrepreneurship) which I traverse constantly, become adept helping others in their climb. There are a great many other mountains I have attempted and stalled mid-climb (say writing or graphic design), and some few I simply looked up at and shook my head before walking away (say art or music) knowing it was not to be. This particular mountain represents a new challenge and one I may never ascend very far. But at this moment, I cannot see a time in which I will cease in my attempts to climb. It is simply too invigorating and the view from higher up seems very much worth it.
I'm paying the "awake at 6am, coming down" price for
having caffeine. I said I wouldn't do that again. But obviously I hate
this feeling less than thinking about her. Or all those great ideas I
don't pursue. Or the half-completed projects I do. Or my general
health and well-being. Oh, let's be honest, it's mostly her. And them.
And all the lack of me.

The soundtrack from the night replays inside my ears and silently I
smile. It is both funny and perverse that the only way I've found to
Stop is to Go. The only way to make the endless madness cease is to
immerse myself in ideas, submerse myself in service. I wrap myself up
in work and drown myself dancing.

If I just get enough forward momentum for something else, anything
else, maybe I can leave the rest behind. Maybe if I figure out how to
Move Forward, I can finally Move On?
They were fun but could use that polish that comes from more road time with more audiences.

Plug-in Stereo was not what I expected and they were a little too mellow for this rowdy crowd. And not many people knew the words so the singing was shy. Instead everyone just clapped a lot to work off the energy.

The lead singer for We Are The In Crowd was wearing a shirt for The Maine. Which of course made her 10x hotter and by extension, the band 5x better.

Every Avenue was struggling a bit vocally, and an unusually reserved crowd didn't help. I blame it on a Monday night time slot with a mixed bag of bands.

Still, it's always good to see a show in a cool venue with fun people.

Tempus Fugatehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11837079658924039253noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10750775.post-79266113597248476422012-02-22T22:36:00.001-08:002012-02-22T22:36:27.451-08:00Some Cities

I got to see Downtown Fiction, We The Kings, and Mayday Parade run an audio train of deliciousness on El Corazon.

When artists say on stage that Seattle audiences are the best, loudest and most fun, it's shows like this they are referring to.
